Custom Engraved Playing Card Boxes — A Groomsman Gift That Deals

Kirk Quesnelle

If you read our post on the engraved mini baseball bats, you already know we have a soft spot for groomsman gifts that actually mean something. The best ones aren’t generic — they’re personal, a little unexpected, and the kind of thing that ends up on a shelf instead of in a drawer.

These custom playing card boxes are exactly that. A solid maple box, CNC-milled to hold a full deck of cards, with four neodymium magnets that snap the lid shut, and custom artwork laser-engraved on both sides. Each box personalized for a member of the wedding party.

Milling the Boxes

Every box starts on the CNC. The body is pocketed out of solid maple — carved to the exact dimensions of a standard deck of playing cards. There’s a thumb notch milled into one corner so you can actually get the cards out (a small detail, but the kind of thing that separates a finished product from a prototype). Recesses for the neodymium magnets are cut into both the body and the lid so they sit flush and snap together cleanly.

Once the CNC work is done, everything gets hand-sanded through the grits, the magnets are set into their recesses, and the boxes are finished and prepped for the laser.

The Lid — Where It Gets Fun

The lid is where these boxes really come alive. We designed custom playing card artwork for each one — Kings, Jacks, the classic card illustrations — but with the groomsman’s name worked into a banner across the face of the card. It’s detailed work. The line art, the cross-hatching, the symmetry of a playing card — all of it has to be crisp for the engraving to read properly on wood.

The back of the lid gets the wedding details: the groomsman’s full name, their role, the couple’s names, and the date. Same layout philosophy as our baseball bat engravings — script for the personal, block for the structural, decorative flourishes to tie it together.

Another wedding, same concept. The magnets are visible on the edge — they snap the lid shut with a satisfying click.

CNC for the structure, laser for the art, magnets for the satisfying snap. Three processes, one box, and a gift nobody’s forgetting.

Cards Included

Every box ships with a full deck of playing cards inside. The fit is snug — the cards sit in the pocket perfectly, and the lid clicks shut over them with the magnets holding everything in place. It’s the kind of thing you pick up and immediately want to open and close a few times just because it feels good.

We’ve made these for multiple weddings now, and the reaction is always the same — people don’t expect it. A wooden box with their name on it, custom card art, magnets that click? It hits different than a gift bag from a department store.

If you’re looking for a groomsman gift (or any wedding party gift) that’s actually worth keeping, this is one of our favourites to make. Every box is built from scratch — CNC, hand-finished, laser-engraved, and designed around your wedding.

Kirk and Krystle of Timber & Smoke Co.

Two people. One workshop. Zero shortcuts.

He's covered in sawdust. She's covered in soy wax. Neither of us would trade it.

Timber & Smoke is what we're building — engraved keepsakes, hand-poured candles, and personalized gifts made from honest materials in our Canadian workshop. Every order is made by us, packed by us, and shipped with the kind of care you'd expect from two people who genuinely love what they make.

Scarlet, our Belgian Malinois, would like you to know she also works here. She steals wood scraps, supervises from her bed, and goes full suck mode the moment anyone sits down.
