Where Sea Monsters Meet Paisley: A Custom Wallet Engraving

Some of the best custom work starts with a conversation that’s been going on for a decade.
One of our longest-running clients — and a close friend — has made it a tradition to bring us his new wallets over the years for a custom engraving. Not just any engraving. Every time, he challenges us to design something completely original. Something that tells a story only he would think to tell. Over ten years, each new wallet becomes a canvas for ideas we never would have dreamed up on our own.
This time, he came to us with three worlds he wanted us to collide into one design.

The Kraken
First: giant squids. Not the nature-documentary kind — the folklore kind. For centuries, sailors returned from open water with stories of massive cephalopods dragging ships beneath the waves. The Kraken, a creature that lives somewhere between colossal squid and giant octopus, has haunted maritime mythology since the time of Aristotle. Our client is obsessed with that lore — the mystery of something ancient, enormous, and just out of sight beneath the surface.
The Paisley

Then there’s Paisley. Most people know it as a pattern on neckties and bandanas, but its roots run deep. The design originated in the Sassanid Persian Empire around the 3rd century AD as a symbol of life — a curved, “hooked” floral motif that’s been reimagined by every culture it’s passed through. There’s something quietly powerful about a decorative pattern that’s survived for over a thousand years.
The Compass
And finally, a compass. Not a centerpiece — just a small compass tucked into the bottom corner on the back. With tentacles and ancient motifs filling the rest of the design, it’s a quiet nod to the maritime world. A little point of direction grounding everything else.

Bringing It All Together
The challenge with custom work like this isn’t just executing the design — it’s finding the balance between elements that don’t obviously belong together. Tentacles intertwining with Paisley curves. A compass quietly holding its ground in the corner. Persian geometry meeting North Atlantic myth.
That tension is what makes a piece like this feel alive. It’s not a stock image pulled from a template. It’s a one-of-one design, rooted in a real conversation with a real person about the things that fascinate them.

And honestly? That’s the work we live for.
