Why Timber & Smoke Exists
Before the sawdust, there was a screen. I was a software developer, the kind of job where you spend years shipping features that, if you're lucky, make someone's day a little easier. I wanted my hands in it. I wanted to make something a person could actually hold. I'd always dabbled in woodworking, and it felt like the natural fit. Mix the technology I already knew with something real. I design it, set it up, and finish every piece myself, even when a laser or CNC is doing the cutting.
That was the real pull. I wanted to make things that actually meant something to someone, not quietly improve a metric nobody would ever feel. A gift with a name on it, a date, a message that actually lands, that is worth more than another feature update nobody notices. So I set out to make things built to last. Not mass produced, not disposable. Solid hardwood, made to outlast the moment it was given in.
“The day it became real wasn't the first design I finished. It was the first time a stranger trusted what I made enough to bring it into their life.”
Someone who had never met me, choosing something made by hand over everything mass produced. That's the feeling this whole shop is still built around, one order at a time.
Curious how it actually comes together?
